Low humidity may make for better hair days, but it can wreak havoc on your skin. In arid climates and/or high altitudes, like the desert or mountains, the air can literally suck moisture from your skin, leaving it dry, itchy and feeling tight.


It Is All In the Ingredients

To counter the effects of a chronically dry climate, it is essential to moisturise as much as possible. Look for moisturisers with the following ingredients to ensure you are quenching your skin’s thirst for moisture:

  • Glycerin: A hydrating moisturiser that draws water molecules into the top layer of skin.
  • Petrolatum: An occlusive moisturiser that prevents moisture loss.
  • Niacinimide: Also known as vitamin B3, this ingredient enhances skin’s natural moisture barrier.

To make your moisturiser work harder and smarter, apply it immediately after cleansing to lock in moisture, massaging into skin to help it penetrate better. For a surge of intense moisture, apply right after you shower. You will reap the benefits of the heat and steam by opening pores, allowing for moisturisers to reach deep into the skin. Applying in the evening also hydrates skin while you sleep and ensures you wake up with a fresh, supple complexion.


More than Moisturiser

Moisturiser is the most effective way to stave off the effects of a dry climate, but it is not the only thing you can do:

  • Add A Serum and sheet mask to Your Routine. Consider adding a serum to your facial care regimen. It has concentrated moisturizing benefits that can instantly soothe dry skin while offering a deep moisturizing experience. You could also pamper yourself with a sheet mask for dry skin that will give you an extra boost of hydration.
  • Invest in a Humidifier. Humidifiers add moisture to the air to counteract dryness.
  • Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Aim for 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Even if it feels like water is nowhere to be found and your skin is taking a beating, do not let your skin stay thirsty. Keep these moisturizing tips top-of-mind next time you find your skin dry and tight.
